The University of Malaya was initially set up in Singapore in 1949 as an amalgamation of the two premier institutions of higher education in colonial Malaya and Singapore. Following the independence of Malaya in 1957, two autonomous divisions of the university, one in Singapore and one in Kuala Lumpur, were established in 1959.
The University motto is “Ilmu Punca Kemajuan” (Knowledge is the Key to Success), so the Faculty of Medicine continues to strive to the best of ability to live up to this ideal. University Malaya Medical Centre is one of the organisations in the Ministry of Higher Education. Main objectives of UMMC are health services, learning and research.

Prof. Dr. Prepageran Narayanan is currently a Senior Professor and Consultant in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at the University Malaya. His expertise includes Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Otology, Neurotology, Skull Base Surgery, and Cochlear Implants.
He is a member of numerous national and international organizations including the International Consensus of Nasal Polyps Working Group, Asian Rhinology Society, Asian Academy of Neurotology and Otology, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and International Federation of Skull Base Surgery.
He is the author of more than 20 textbooks and has more than 200 papers published in local and international journals. He is also on the Editorial Board of more than 15 journals.
