The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has the largest cochlear implant program in Canada and one of the largest in North America. They are currently implanting over 250 cochlear implants as well as active bone conduction, middle ear implants and auditory brainstem implants in adults per year.

About Us

Sunnybrook is recognised for its excellence in patient care. This excellence is based on research, which enables to better understand the auditory system. The clinical outcomes research is focused on cognition, aging and dementia, remote programming and care, anatomy based fitting, hearing preservation & EAS and bone conduction verification. Basic and transactional research is focused on inner ear drug delivery, auditory hair cell biology and regeneration, magnetic targeting delivery, stem cell and gene therapy. Other technological innovations include robotics and otoplan.

The center would be represented by Prof. Dr. Joseph M. Chen, an otolaryngologist-in-chief since 2007, who is the director of the Sunnybrook otology skull base fellowship program as well as the inner ear regeneration initiative and the cochlear implant program. He is the provincial coordinator of the Ontario cochlear implant program and the professor at the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the University of Toronto.
