We are Specialized In
The division of Otorhinolaryngology is part of the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. It is based at Groote Schuur, Red Cross Memorial Children’s and the New Somerset Hospitals. Groote Schuur Hospital is locally renowned as the training ground for some of South Africa’s best doctors, surgeons and nurses.
As a government funded teaching hospital, Groote Schuur is staffed by highly experienced individuals who can typically be seen mentoring medical school students from the University of Cape Town who are completing the final period of their training. The standard of care is therefore very high, and patients are only admitted to the facility if they have been directed to do so by a primary or secondary healthcare worker or facility. The University of Cape Town has been ranked, according to several internationally compiled and authoritative indexes, to be the best university on the African continent and among the best 200 universities worldwide.
Groote Schuur Hospital cooperates with Cape Hearing Implants (CHi) and has a combined CI team of the highest level. CHi is a collaboration of independent, private healthcare service providers who specialise in implantable hearing solutions. They include ear, nose and throat surgeons, audiologists, speech therapists and psychologists, all of whom are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. CHi is thus able to provide a professional and comprehensive service for the identification, surgical implantation and rehabilitation of people with hearing loss.
About Us
Through the work of the division at these tertiary hospitals, the full spectrum of pathology at the levels of both the developed world and the developing world is experienced.
The division provides a comprehensive ENT service to state patients and to private patients at the University of Cape Town Private Academic Hospital. The various subspecialties within the division of Otolaryngology include Head and Neck Oncology, Rhinology and anterior skull base surgery, Otology, Neuro-Otology and lateral skull base surgery and Paediatric Otolaryngology. More recently the division has expanded to include transorbital surgery, cochlear implantation and paediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction.
Prof. Dr. Hofmeyr, who represents the HEARRING Group, is a member of the South African Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and The South African Cochlear Implant Group. He is a founder member and director of Cape Hearing Implants, a non-profit company specialising in implantable hearing devices. He is also currently the only surgeon in South Africa who performs middle cranial fossa temporal bone surgery. Dr. Hofmeyr is also on the CHi team carrying out 90% of the hearing implantation surgeries as well as the training. He was Head of the ENT Department and the Chief ENT Surgeon of the South African National Defense Force in the past. The collaboration between Prof. Dr. Luis Hofmeyr and Dr. Tasneem Harris, who is an ENT surgeon, is very important, since it allows the two experts to provide the implants as well as the training at the Groote Schuur Hospital.
